The best personal finance software

The best personal finance software, hands down! Have used See Finance for years. Great product, great support.

I have been using SEE finance for several years, after Intuit dropped support for Quicken for Mac (they have since somewhat reinstated support in the form of Quicken Essentials and more recently a "full" version of Quicken. Intuits decision resulted in a sudden surge of fiancial programs - Ive bought and tried at least 3 and tried Quicken Essentials. Somewhat to my surprise, SEE Finance was just easier to use than any of them, although it wasnt as pretty as some. More than anything else, I want to be able to find transactions quickly and be able to generate reports quickly and on the fly - How much did I spend with XXX in 2014? How does what I spent in 2014 Jan-Jul compare with what I spent in 2015 Jan - Jul? What are all my expenses with the memo "sales tax to be paid" for this year to-date All these are incredibly easy, as the software uses Apples programming guidlines for tables that enables this sort of powerful filtering in a highly disciplined fashion. Investment reporting is not as full featured - but it is very easy to apply a filter to look at all transactions for "AAPL" for example and get a full picture of what is going on. It would be nice to have things like an Internal Rate of Return, but I rather feel that if you cant calculate this yourself, you are better leaving this alone - not all software seems to do this correctly! Exporting is a breeze, as is importing from banks etc using QFX and other types of files. See Finance is more manual than some of the other programs but it has never left me in the "OMG, what a mess, Ill just start from scratch" state that they have usually left me in, either. Transfer transactions are not linked, so if you change one side, you have to manually change the other - this bothers some, but if you know its going to be the case, it is easy to allow for. In all, Im extremely happy, particularly around tax time when Im preparing a schedule C! It "just works"

I’ve been using the beta version of this app for the past four years. The developers really take their time to get things right. The app is rock solid, and fully featured. It’s the only one that was able to fully replace Quicken for me, with full accounting, reporting, and most importantly able to maintain full brokerage account records on stocks and options.

This is to my taste the best Mac Finance application. I have been using it since 2013 and it is really very flexible, fun to use and also colorful which is nice when you have to deal with dull numbers in black and white. My compliment guys…

I’ve been using and recommending the beta version for several years. I transitioned from another financial package that is more industry standard. Once I transitioned, I have never had a reason to look at the newer releases of other packages. Check whether your financial institution will allow downloads via direct connect. Neither of my credit unions offer that feature, so ensuring the transaction register is correct takes a bit of work. Any question I have asked of support thru the website are answered quickly and accurately. The team takes the time to answer my specific question, and think thru what problem I am really trying to solve. In cases when I’ve asked about a feature that was not available, the response has always just stated that fact. They have not tried to dance around the request, or say yes, but really mean no. This allows me to set my expectations accurately.

I started using See Finance over four years ago - after Quicken abandonded Mac users. This proved to be exactly what I needed for tracking investments and general finance. It imported my data better than all other Mac finance apps at the time - and I think I tried them all. It is able to download from all my financial institutions, and is very stable. I’ve gone back and tried the new Quicken 2015 for Mac and although not bad (I would have stayed with Quicken if they had this version 4 years ago), I like See Finance better. It is great for viewing your entire portfolio at a glance. I’m hoping that now that See Finance is App store compatible with sandboxing, we’ll start to see some feature enhancements. My suggestions are: 1) ROI% calculation column in the Portfolio view (this is the one feature I still miss from Quicken 2007) 2) Investment allocation breakdown 3) Associated IOS app with portfolio tracking

perfect app, easy to use and does what it says it does. As with all apps, make sure your financial institution allows direct downloads, some charge for this service. Regardless, would buy again and again…and i used other programs for years. No More.

I’ve used this since it’s early beta days — like many I needed something that would work after Quicken abandoned us Mac users. SEE Finance has been the best of the bunch since. As others point out it’s stable, fast, accurate, imports QIF and QFX files well, and will work with your bank (most of them, most of the time). There are quirks for us old Quicken users: SEE apparently implements elements of double-entry accounting. I’m sure that’s a good idea but it took a while to understand that. Complaints: 1) I still can’t get used to the ‘reconcile’ function of SEE after having used Quicken. The latter just plain worked, whereas SEE is confusing. 2) Investment transactions still aren’t as seamless as I’d like, though to their credit SEE 1.0 is better than the 0.8x and 0.9x betas at this. I just want an accurate accounting for tax purposes and to know what my investments are worth. Overall: 4-stars with plenty of potential. Again: stable, reliable, workhorse for personal accounting. I won’t go back to Quicken.

When Quicken abandoned me, SEE Finance came to the rescue and they did most of what I needed, manage investments accounts, direct connect download transactions from financial institutions and brokerages, stock lookups. Glad that they finally released an app store version. Support was excellent, they always respond and are helpful. UI, Reports and entering double transactions can be improved, but overall it works well. Have used it for 6 years and it has been solid. Nothing comes close.

I’ve tried every finance/budget app for both Windows and OS X. I’ve even used my own full-blown Excel/VBA applications to customize my finance tracking. SEE, for me, is just the right balance of control and simplicity. It’s clean, fast, does what it’s supposed to do, and doesn’t over-reach. Some apps try to do too much, some are limited by their platform (web), and some err on the side of form over function. SEE accomplishes its mission with surgical precision and efficiency, and then gets out of your way. That’s what finance apps should do. The real reason, though, for my five stars is that their service is amazing. I’ve been using SEE since the early beta days, and over the past almost-five years, I’m still amazed at their responsiveness and effectiveness. It doesn’t seem to matter when I email them, I always get an answer quickly, and it solves my problem. Several times, they even answered within the hour. They listen, fix things, and actively improve. Even though I could have upgraded my non-MAS app for half-price, I decided to support their work by buying here.

Totally agree with reviewer maxfinis. I have been using See Finance since Quicken decided to dumb down their home versions. I don’t require the complexity of QuickBooks, but need someting more than the basics to keep track of some simple home businesses. I paid for and have used the beta versions for years; now that it’s a “full release” I’m happy to support the developers.

After only using MInt.com since 2011, I had a major data loss in my main checking account losing years of transactions and organization. There are no backups to revert to with Mint, so if anything goes wrong, your out of luck, This prompeted me to take another look at finanace apps on the Mac. I spent the last 5 days really going through Quicken for Mac 2016 (I really wanted to like this as I was a huge Quicken user on Mac way back when, OS 8 and 9 era), iBank5, Moneydance, MoneyWell and I settled on See Finance. I love all the customizations available, the cleaness of the interface, the filters you can set to help categorize transactions. I contacted support a couple times before buying and they were fast and extremly helpful. Financial Apps are a personal thing, but I won’t be looking any longer for the perfect fit for me. See Finance just works.

After moving to an Apple MacBook after years and years using Microsoft, I needed a personal finance manager to replace Quicken. I was incredibly lucky to run across Simonoce’s SEE Finance. The application turned out to be everything I needed - and then some. Most importantly is Simonoce’s support: totally professional, very knowledgable, and incredibly responsive. You needn’t hesitate for a minute before deciding to go with SEE Finance - you’ll never regret it.

Not user friendly at all. No flexibiity on choosing to use app for limited functionality. No introduction guide or tutorial. For the fee charged, that should be a given.

I was using Quicken 2015 for mac and was very frustrated with the program. I search and tried many different solutions but settled with See Finance. So far it has meet my expectations and needs.

I was a Quicken deluxe user for years. I was forced to choose a new personal finance software when Intuit failed to update their software to work correctly when OS X Rosetta support was suspended. I tried most of the mac personal finance software available as a replacement. See Finance was the only one that sucessfully imported over 15 years of data with minimal errors. I’ve been using it for about 3 years and it is awesome. Better than Quicken ever was! It has a few minor issues, the biggest of which is the lack of an automatic entry of an account-to-account transaction in the secondary acount. However, it is minor compared to how great the app functions!

Funny208 · 10 years ago

Like other reviewers over the years I have tried just about all Mac OS finance apps. The SEE Finance app has exceeded my expectations with the functionality and ease of using plus great customer support! Having discovered what a great application the SEE Finance app is, this is one I would definitely recommend!
